Making Diversity Work in the Public Sector
Public Sector Providers hosted two conferences on “Making Diversity Work in the Public Sector” in the Autumn of 2005 – one in Harrogate and one in Birmingham. The conferences were a mix of high profile keynote speakers and interactive workshops.
Over 100 delegates attended the conferences, from a wide range of public sector bodies, including Central Government departments, NHS trusts, local Councils and the emergency services.

Keynote speakers included Surinder Sharma (Director of Human Rights, Dept. of Health) and Rob Berkeley (Runnymede Trust), pictured right with Jane Hatton of Public Sector Providers.
Other speakers included Jane Nokes (National School of Government), Allan Pease (author) and Loraine Martins (Audit Commission)
Speaking of the NHS, Surinder stated that although they already have a diverse
workforce:
“The NHS must understand the health needs of all communities and groups, and
embed this into mainstream health care delivery. The workforce must reflect the
diversity of those it serves in order to provide appropriate services and to
promote equality.”

Delegates attended a variety of interactive workshops exploring some of the practical issues around diversity, and chatted to keynote speakers (Loraine Martins, Audit Commission, right)
“Really interesting conference – have got loads of new ideas to take back to my
organisation, and the motivation to see them implemented. Thanks!”
